From the very beginning, humans and animals have used sound as a medium of information and as a means of measurement. Bats can locate their position using ultrasound. Dolphins can detect schools of fish and other objects underwater using ultrasonic frequencies up to 120 kHz, and are even able to determine the heart rate of other animals. Probably the oldest type of sound measurement used by human beings is counting the seconds between seeing lightning and hearing thunder to determine how close a storm really is.

The idea of ​​using such measurement techniques - albeit very refined - for industrial purposes led to the development of ultrasonic sensors. They emit high-frequency sound pulses, inaudible to the human ear, and measure the time it takes for the signals to bounce back after bouncing off an object. Robust sensors prove their capabilities in a wide variety of applications, especially through their ability to work without any contact with the objects being measured or detected. This is possible even in extreme environmental conditions. Also impressive is their ability to accurately detect a wide range of different materials and colors.

Examples are ultrasonic double sheet inspection systems that operate without any calibration, label sensors that use special learning methods to be able to detect even critical labels and splices at high transport speeds, as well as ultrasonic proximity switches with switching frequencies up to 250 Hz.
